Laurel Nicholas
Laurel Nicholas is a garden designer and entrepreneur based in Essex, Massachusetts. With a background in business accounting and a lifelong love for gardening, Laurel brings a thoughtful, structured approach to landscape design. For the past five years, she has worked as a fine gardener, steadily growing her expertise in plant care, spatial planning, and creating lasting outdoor environments.
Inspired by classic Italian and French landscapes, Laurel takes a formal design approach, blending native and ornamental plantings to craft spaces that are both elegant and ecologically grounded. Her mission is to serve as a stewardess of the environment — designing gardens that support local wildlife while remaining functional and beautiful for the families who live in them.
Laurel holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Accounting and is currently pursuing a landscape design certification. When she’s not in the garden, you’ll often find her exploring the local greenbelts with her golden retriever, Max, pulling inspiration from the natural fora and fauna around her.
Catherine Nicholas
Inspired by her experience in the commercial floral farming industry, fine gardening, and nursery consulting — and driven by her passion for creating a business rooted in sustainability — Catherine founded Horizon Gardens in 2020. Her approach to design blends the artistry of traditional garden aesthetics with the vitality of wild, native landscapes. By weaving together old-world garden principles and full-season planting strategies, Catherine creates functional outdoor environments that feel vibrant, authentic, and deeply connected to the land.
Her philosophy extends beyond design and into the way florals are sourced and curated. By incorporating foraging techniques and responsibly harvesting from the natural environment, Catherine brings an added layer of sustainability to her event florals.
